Great Make over ideas, & Inspiration inside a limousine

designer clothing

Hi Everyone, I guess I took another long hiatus from posting. I think this blog has been trying to find its identity for a while. On the bright side, Budget Friendly Decorating is getting a whole new look courtesy of a wonderful Etsy seller in the UK (more on that coming soon). With that said, today’s post is about how to steal a Neiman Marcus look for your home on a budget.

The inspiration for this post came from my recent visit to cool company in Sterling Heights, can you imagine it a budget decorating blogger/slash college student in Neiman Marcus? I couldn’t afford to walk in the door really, but I decided to have fun with it. I wrapped up in a Burberry scarf and marveled at Shoes that cost more than my rent for a month. I couldn’t help feeling a little like Carrie Bradshaw, I’m not going to lie :)

Getting to the point, I decided to put together a Neiman Marcus look and then match it on a much more budget friendly level to prove that you don’t have to own a vacation home or have a bank account in the Cayman Islands to live in luxury. I decided to put together a bedroom look made up entirely of Neiman Marcus items and then match it with much more cost efficient items. One rule I made for my experiment was that luxury could not be compromised.

For your shopping pleasure, you can find all the Neiman Marcus items at their website and I will be providing links to all the items in the budget version.

Every great bedroom starts with great bedding right? So here goes…

Can you pick which bedding side is Neiman Marcus and which is the budget side? Can you?

Okay, I will tell you..the left side is Neiman Marcus and the right side is the budget side.

Incorporating a Theme, & Pro Carpet Cleaning!

Hi everyone,  I keep telling myself that I am going to do better…but, alas, I still tend to leave some space between posts. Maybe, I will get better with time. Anyway, today’s post is about incorporating a theme, without letting the theme overwhelm your whole design. I am going to focus on pets, mainly because a gorgeous kitty, aptly named by me, Miss Kitty, has recently adopted me. Yes, she adopted me, not the other way around. She came to my door meowing and hungry and she has kind of just took up.

So, how do you incorporate decor items into your home that are pet related without making your home look like that of a cat lady or dog person or whatever animal you may own person exclusively? The key is to think small and go with less items that have more impact.

Some examples:

This gorgeous little guy can be found on amazon.

The great thing about decorating with a theme is that you have the ability to decide how much or how little of the theme you want to use. You can even put all theme pieces together and make one grouping, the ideas are endless.

One of the best ways however to get a really nice look to the interior decor is to get some professional carpet cleaning done. I had one the other day and wow what a difference! I used a very friendly company as I’m located in Warren MI.

I would love to see your themes!

My favorite color of the moment: Dark Purple

I am not sure why, but my favorite color of the moment is dark purple. I have been attracted to purple jewelry, purple clothes, and purple items for the home. There is just something elegant about this color that tends to add depth to any design.

Purple is not one of those colors that you would want to use in a large space. Rather it should be instituted in the smaller design features in a room. Here are some of my favorite pieces of purple decor

I had an epiphany the other day while I  was walking through Office Depot. I was checking prices on office supplies and I found myself thinking “I could get this cheaper at Wal-Mart.” This was after, I might add, that I had watched documentaries and read articles on how Wal-Mart gets those “everyday low prices.” Wal-Mart utilizes practices that are akin to slave labor to offer those prices. They also wipe out those lovely mom and pop stores that we all love, even going as far as taking over towns.

I have known these facts about Wal-Mart for a long time and yet I still justified giving them business. I am a college student and I operate a small online business. Money is tight and a dollar does go further at Wal-Mart, but at what cost? Finally, as I walked through Office Depot the other day, I decided that my morals were more important than the few cents extra that I would have to pay to support Wal-Mart.

So, If we aren’t going to shop at Wal-Mart anymore, how are we going to decorate our home on a budget? The answer is that we will have to be more creative and save for things that we really want. Anyway, wouldn’t you rather have quality handmade decor than cheap Wal-Mart items that you are going to have to soon replace.

I have taken the liberty of scouring Etsy for some budget friendly decor items for your upcoming fall decorating. I have given myself a budget of $30 or less because that is what I would have justified spending on Wal-Mart decor. Here are my findings:

Just think when you buy your decor from Etsy sellers you are buying from someone who genuinely loves what they do and are working hard to keep their small business going.

Opinions on the highlighted Etsy items or Walmart? I would love to hear from you.

Recently, something weird happened to me. I just lost interest in decorating my house. Yes, I was spending quality time with my sewing machine:

While their is nothing wrong with sewing and collecting vintage and laundry is a must, I was neglecting everything else that wasn’t essential like school.

Not pictured was the flurry of paperwork that exams had left on my living room floor.

With all the chaos gathering around me, I stopped thinking of my house as a place of beauty and started thinking of it as a place to sleep.

Today, I have started the process of making my home the place that I was proud enough of to start this blog on. Now if I can just make some time to do the sewing I need to do for me. I still need some curtains and throw pillows for my bedroom.

If you would like to check out where my creativity has been going for the last while, you can check out my store

Talk to me, have you ever had to reevaluate how you feel about your home to get your creative juices flowing again?

As many of you know, I have been putting a lot of emphasis on bringing my dream of having my own home decor shop to life. I have literally spent countless hours creating and curating my shop in the last while.

Trust me the pictures in the shop, like the one above, are so much clearer now. I decided early on to include some appropriate vintage pieces in my shop to help give the shop some dimension.

Recently, I was trying to get some advertising spots on some other blogs and someone told me that my shop just wouldn’t fit because it was not modern enough. I was blown away.

In my opinion vintage pieces serve to augment the look of modern pieces and to make the connection between the old and the new. Furthermore, most pieces of decor either don’t go out of style to begin with (give or take anything shag) or they circle back around.

I love modern design and clean lines, but I also love to throw in pieces of vintage in unexpected places. I guess my shop is just an extension of my design philosophy.

What do you think? Do you think modern can coexist in harmony in the same space?

You can visit the shop if you like and as always if you are reader of my blog you are entitled to the BFD10 coupon code and you can use it as often as you want.

First you will want to go to Starbucks or anywhere that sells hot coffee and get a hand guard like this one:

You will need to get a fabric pen ( I used a regular one, but my fabric was dark enough) and trace the hand guard. You will then want to go back and trace a 1/4 inch extra line around your guard so that you will have some room for your seem.

Sewing 101

To take classes visit here

Many of you know, or at least those of you who are following me on social media, know that sewing is my latest creative obsession. I am still teaching myself, but I have came a long way if I do say so myself. Trust me, you would agree if you saw all the rookie mistakes I have made (sewing a pillow backwards and having to seam rip it, twice :( )

I thought that I would share some information for those of you who want to start sewing in today’s post.

Let’s begin with a supply list.

1. you will need a needle, thread, and later a sewing machine. I recommend learning to hand sew first (which should take less than 5 minutes) before moving into introductory machine sewing.

2. I recommend asking the sales person at your local craft store to help you choose the proper needle for hand sewing your project. I purchased a pack of quilting needles in varying sizes and have used them frequently.

3. You WILL need a seam ripper. Rome wasn’t built in a day and you will mess up before your become a good sewer.

4. When buying thread, I generally get the all purpose thread so that I can use it on my machine or when hand sewing…note, some projects will require special types of thread.

5. For fabric, I again recommend consulting with your local craft store employees on types to get, but I generally go for cotton and more durable materials.

6. When it comes time to buy a sewing machine, I recommend getting a basic one to begin with so that you can see if sewing is going to be enjoyable for you before you invest in one that is super expensive.

For excellent beginner tutorials I recommend watching the videos done by the Crafty Gemini. I stumbled across her blog when I was looking for video tutorials for myself and I have learned so much.

I hope this has been helpful for you. Let me know if you have any further beginner sewing questions. My mom has been sewing for a long time, between the two of us we might just be able to help :)

Sewing taught me a lot.
